Empowering Futures: Career Guidance in Kannigapuram Inspired by WOHAA Speed Mentoring

On Thursday, 1st May 2025, our Wings of Hope Slum Tuition project in Kannigapuram hosted a powerful Career Guidance event, inspired by our very own Speed Mentoring initiative—a programme we’ve proudly delivered for over 13 years.
The idea was sparked during our recent visit to the project with our 2023/24 WOHAA Winners in February. The volunteers were deeply moved by hearing more about the range of workshops and events we offer our WOHAA participants, especially our Speed Mentoring Event. Our event allows students to connect with professionals from diverse industries, helping them explore career options and the paths to reach them. Motivated by this model, they set out to offer a similar experience to their local students.
The event featured a distinguished panel of speakers:
- Dr Laavanya encouraged Years 10–12 students to make informed academic choices, particularly in the arts stream, and gave clarity on undergraduate options.
- Mrs Amudhapriya S introduced engineering as a dynamic career, motivating students to explore its many opportunities and recognise their own potential.
- Mr Sanjay S, a local alumnus, shared his journey from Kannigapuram to becoming a successful R&D engineer—an inspiring example of perseverance.
- Dr Elango spoke about determination and the value of government resources, while outlining various careers in medicine beyond MBBS.
- Mr Lawrence Senthil Kumar provided practical tips on exam preparation and goal setting, highlighting the benefits of academic and competitive exams.
Following the talks, students expressed genuine gratitude for the exposure, guidance, and encouragement they received. Many reported feeling more motivated and better informed about their academic and career options.
The day concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, distribution of informational pamphlets, and a shared community lunch. This event not only mirrored the spirit of our Speed Mentoring programme but also demonstrated how powerful mentorship and community support can be in shaping young lives.
Your students can book their space here for our 13th Speed Mentoring Event on Sunday, 1st June.
