CV Writing and Interview Skills with Paul Gabard (LBS): Wings of Hope Workshop
On Sunday 7th January, we began the New Year full steam ahead with a CV Writing and Interview Skills workshop led by Paul Gabard.
There are many techniques online of how to build your CV, but Paul took it step by step, taking the time to inform the students of a clear layout of an effective CV and allowed the children to ask a range of questions such as:
- What would you recommend to write on your CV if you haven’t had your first job yet?
- I am 14 and have been looking for things such as volunteering or work experience. Everyone I have spoken to have said I am to young. What other ways are there to find opportunities, where age is not a problem?
- Is it normal to not know what you want to do yet at the age of 16?
With these range of questions from students, Paul was able to talk through the benefits of volunteering and work experience and the different avenues you can go down depending on your age. Paul was impressed to hear that with the students taking part in WOHAA, part of their journey is taking part in a Community Action Project; having WOHAA on their CVs and mentioning it in future applications, the students will be able to stand out from the crowd showing their commitment. He spoke about the importance of showcasing your interests / extra-curricular activities on your CV; this is a way for your future employer to know a little bit more about you.
Paul also mentioned to the students that attending workshops such like the ones we offer as part of our WOHAA programme will aid a CV and applications. During the workshop, Paul explained how interviews are simply a “conversation”; it is an opportunity for both parties to exchange information. The employer will be evaluating the candidate’s qualifications, skills and cultural fit, whilst the applicant gains an insight into the job’s responsibilities and the company they hope to work for.
Preparing for an interview can be nerve-wracking, Paul explained each step that you should take when preparing:
Research: Learn about the company and understand the role
Practice: Rehearse common interview questions with friends or family
Dress professionally: Make a positive first impression
A huge THANK YOU to Paul for you guidance for our students during this workshop!
